New CCTV cameras costing £50,000 will help make the streets of Shawlands safer.
Two new fixed CCTV cameras are being installed in the area to deter antisocial behaviour and help police prosecute anyone who causes trouble.
The cameras will be sited at Shawlands Cross where Pollokshaws Road meets Kilmarnock Road and at the junction of Minard Road and Pollokshaws Road. They will be monitored at the city’s CCTV control room which is also run by (GCSS).
Councillor Archie Graham, Chair of the Shawlands Town Centre Steering Group, said: “The installation of these cameras is fantastic news for the area. It will improve public safety and reassure the public – especially in the evenings and early hours of the morning. The cameras will also help police identify and prosecute anyone caught committing crime.

Chief Inspector Kenny MacDonald of Strathclyde Police said: “It has been proven elsewhere that CCTV impacts directly upon crime and importantly the fear of crime. Accordingly, not only will the installation of CCTV at the two sites accrue benefit to local residents and commerce but it is also hoped that in nurturing a safer environment, more people from the wider community will be encouraged to visit Shawlands and use the many cultural, leisure and business facilities that the area has to offer.”
Funding for the installation of the cameras came from a variety of sources including Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Community & Safety Services, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and Glasgow Regeneration Agency.
