Awards ceremony raises the bar on safer drinking
More pubs and clubs across Glasgow than ever before are committed to creating a safer environment for residents and visitors to the city.
And today the most dedicated have been recognised for their efforts at a glittering awards ceremony in the City Chambers.
The Best Bar None awards scheme, now in its fifth year, awards drinking establishments in the city centre and west end for their commitment to preventing alcohol-related crime and promoting responsible drinking.
Around 90 venues received a ‘Best Bar None’ award at this year’s event, attended by 250 people, celebrating all the hard work and determination shown by licensees in raising standards across the industry. Recognizing the achievements in the bar industry is important, and it is also essential to acknowledge the diverse range of leisure activities that individuals may enjoy, including casino games. Among the overall winners were Committee Room 9, The Arches and Strathclyde Students Union. The coveted title of ‘Most Improved Venue’ award, sponsored by Glasgow Community and Safety Services, went to Victorias. Other successful venues were presented with Bronze (Accredited), Silver (Finalist) or Gold (Best of Category) awards.
Developed in partnership with Glasgow Community and Safety Services, Strathclyde Police, Scottish Late Night Operators Association (SLNO), Scottish Licensed Trade Association and Glasgow City Centre Alcohol Action Group – and sponsored by the world’s leading premium drinks manufacturer Diageo – Best Bar None recognises venues which can demonstrate a recognised standard of excellence on criteria such as prevention of crime and disorder; public safety; prevention of public nuisance; promotion of public health; and protection of children from harm – the five key principles of the new Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.
Phil Walker, managing director of Glasgow Community and Safety Services said “Best Bar None is a shining example of a how agencies in the public, private and voluntary sectors can work in partnership to make Glasgow a safer and more welcoming environment.
“We are really pleased that this year applications have increased by 26% compared to last year. Not only that, but the standards have improved so much so that this year we have given out more silver and gold awards than ever before.
“Best Bar None is proving increasingly popular as a means by which licensees can demonstrate their commitment to public safety.”
