Glasgow Community and Safety Services –

BEST BAR NONE AWARDS SCHEME 2009

Glasgow City Centre and West End licensees will be invited to take part in the Best Bar None Awards Scheme at a launch ceremony in the City Chambers on Tuesday 21st April 2009.

The scheme is now in its fifth year in Glasgow and recognises venues which demonstrate high standards in areas such as crime prevention and disorder; public safety, promotion of public health, protection of children from harm and prevention of public nuisance.

More than 250 awards have been given out to Glasgow venues since the launch of the scheme in 2005 and last year 80 awards were issued. The scheme has grown considerably since its launch in 2005 where only 39 venues received awards; however, more important is the improvement of standards with almost double the number of gold awards issued in 2008 compared to 2007. The scheme has been rolled out to other Scottish cities and towns.

Venues apply to become part of the Best Bar None scheme, and bronze, silver or gold awards are given out based on their applications and an inspection by a specialised team from partner agencies.

The Best Bar None Awards Scheme is a project developed and managed by a partnership involving Glasgow Community and Safety Services, Glasgow City Centre Alcohol Action Group, Strathclyde Police and licensed trade associations. It is sponsored by drinks manufacturer, Diageo, and supported both locally and nationally by the Glasgow Licensing Board and Scottish Government.

Best Bar None aims to recognise and encourage a safer and more welcoming licensing environment in Glasgow. Winners of the Best Bar None Awards 2009 will be announced in November.
